New York worker suffers amputation following accident

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2015 | Firm News, Workers' Compensation |

Workplace injuries can happen to any Nee York worker at any time. While the effect of the injury will vary depending the facts in each case, often the injury will negatively impact the life of the worker in some way. If the injury is severe enough, a worker can even be left permanently injured.

One New York worker was recently left permanently injured following an accident. According to reports, the 43-year-old man had worked in sanitation for 21 years. While on board a collection truck, the man fell from the cab. At that moment, the trucks front wheels ran over the man’s left hand. He was taken to a local hospital following the workplace accident. However, the man’s hand was crushed.

Reports claim that doctors were unable to save the man’s hand. It had to be amputated at the wrist. While the amputation will leave the man permanently injured, it will also end his career as a well-known artist. The man is known for his graffiti-inspired art work.

Police are still investigating how the man fell from the garbage truck. The man who had been driving the truck was given a breath test, but no criminal charges are expected following this workplace injury.

When a worker, like the man in this case, is seriously injured in a workplace accident, that worker has legal rights. Workers’ compensation can help to cover the financial costs of an accident. While this compensation cannot take away the emotional pain of suffering a devastating permanent injury, it can help people pay for their medical care and other expenses.

Workers should make sure to understand their legal right to workers’ compensation following a serious accident or permanent injuries.
