Construction accident in New York City leaves three injured

On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, three workers were injured and needed to be rescued following the collapse of a building they were working on in Astoria, Queens, in New York City. The incident occurred when the upper portion of the home they were working on collapsed, leaving them trapped inside.

Shortly after fire crews arrived they found that one of the workers had managed to escape, but that two others remained inside. One worker was listed in serious condition at the scene. A second worker was found trapped under debris. He was listed in critical condition. A third worker was also located, but was stuck under over a ton of construction material. He was given IV drugs to minimize the pain while workers tried to dig him out. The man remained conscious, but he was in a lot of pain during the entire ordeal. He was eventually freed and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Buildings Department Deputy Commissioner of Enforcement stated that the incident is still under investigation. He went on to add that heavy equipment is supposed to remain on the lower level, unless given permission to stay on the roof.

As the investigation is still ongoing, it remains to be seen if any violations took place at the construction site. Regardless of fault or liability, if you have been the victim of a workplace injury or illness, you may qualify for workers' compensation or Social Security Disability benefits, depending on the severity of the injury or illness. Employers must adhere to strict guidelines provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to assure a safe working environment.
