Filing an appeal of an initial denial of SSD benefits

On Behalf of | Dec 2, 2016 | Social Security Disability |

Some of our readers in New York may know that not every application for Social Security Disability benefits is approved. In fact, it is usually estimated that approximately 60 percent of applications for SSD benefits are denied. That is a pretty high rate of denial, which is why it is so important to get the right information submitted with an initial application for Social Security Disability benefits.

However, if a New York worker’s application for SSD benefits is denied on the initial application, all hope is not lost. It is possible to appeal that initial decision. But, those who will be pursuing an appeal need to know how the appeals process works.

First, the applicant will need to gather all of the required personal information, such as their identifying information and contact information. Also, applicants need to notify the Social Security Administration of the date of the denial of benefits, as well as the representative who reviewed the initial application. After that, applicants will need to gather all of the information they can about their medical records. This can include any changes in the applicant’s medical condition, the contact information for medical treatment providers and any changes in the applicant’s daily routines.

The good news is that much of this information can be submitted to the Social Security Administration online. But, this is just the first step in the appeals process. New York workers who have reached this step in the process may need to get more information about how to successfully appeal an initial denial of Social Security Disability benefits.
