Workplace injuries lead to carnival worker's death

This summer parades, street festivals and carnivals have littered cities and towns in New York. As most people celebrate summer, other worked tirelessly to run these temporary playgrounds. Sadly, one carnival worker recently suffered a fatal workplace injury after an accident at one of these fairs.

In this instance, a church's fair was being held at a local community college in Brentwood on Long Island. The injured worker had recently been on break. However, when he returned he reached under the Scat ride he was operating to pick up something. The ride itself is one that has a spinning arm with many baskets to hold the people.

While leaning over, under the ride, this employee was hit in the back of the head by one of the baskets. The 22-year-old man was knocked to the ground by the force of the hit. Although he was transported to a local hospital via a helicopter, medical personal were unable to save him. The injured worker was pronounced dead.

This workplace accident is still under investigation by both the Suffolk County Department of Labor and by OSHA. These agencies will try to determine the cause of the accident and determine if anything could have been done to prevent it.

Whether more could have been done to prevent this fatal workplace injury has yet to be seen. However, in any case, injured workers and the families of those killed in workplace accidents have a right to be compensated for injuries that occur because of those workplace accidents.

Workers' compensation is available to cover medical expenses, lost wages and other rehabilitative costs. Furthermore, a wrongful death suit could compensate for funeral costs, loss of companionship and pain and suffering.
