What types of accidents cause workplace deaths?

Fatal workplace accidents are always a possibility in any New York workplace. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, fatal workplace accidents increased in 2014. In fact, these fatal accidents were up nine percent from 2013.

Fatalities in the workplace are the result of many types of workplace injuries. These injuries are caused by a number of different types of incidents.

The highest number of fatal accidents in the United States in 2014 were due to roadway incidents. These were cases where a person was killed as a result of a car accident while at work, or in some other incident involving a vehicle. Accidents involving transportation accounted for 40 percent of workplace fatalities in the United States that year.

The next highest number of fatal accidents involved slips, trips and falls. According to data, 17 percent of fatal accidents were caused by these types of incidents. Falls to a lower level were the most frequent type of accident in this category. This was a 10 percent increase in these types of accidents from the year before.

Another fatal accident type included coming in contact with dangerous equipment or objects in the workplace. This included being struck by some sort of equipment or object, which accounted for 11 percent of fatal accidents in 2014. Data shows that 16 percent of fatal workplace accidents were caused by violence carried out by another person or an animal. Exposure to harmful chemicals, fires and explosions also accounted for a portion of 2014's fatal workplace accidents.
