Medical care and workers' compensation in New York

New York workers face so many challenges at work., some of which create stress and anxiety for them. In some situations, workers are in physical danger because of their work environments.

In most situations, workers are not totally responsible for making sure they are safe at work. Instead, the responsibility is shared by the employer. If employers fail to keep workers safe, then worker's compensation may be available to help an injured employee.

Many times, employees who suffer injuries must seek medical attention. In today's world, medical care is complicated and expensive. Without help, dealing with the medical expenses that result from a serious workplace injury can financially ruin a person. Thankfully, workers' compensation is available to lessen the burden.

There are, however, limits to the amount of medical care a person can receive under the workers' compensation system. While seeking immediate medical treatment is important following an accident, additional medical care could require advanced authorization, according to New York State Workers' Compensation laws. Under these laws, the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF), must approve medical services of certain professionals when the costs of such services exceed $1,000. These services include occupational therapy, surgical operations or consultations with specialists.

However, once approved for treatment, employees can get a variety of services covered. This includes prescription medication and medical equipment. Additionally, under certain circumstances, people can even be reimbursed for travel costs. In order to qualify for reimbursement, people must submit the correct evidence of the expenses and that they were required by a doctor.

When a New York worker is hurt, it is important that the person understands the workers' compensation system. With the help of an attorney, people can exercise their rights and get the medical treatment they need to deal with the injury.
