New York police officers injured in car accident while on patrol

Every day police officers put themselves in harm's way to protect New York's cities and towns. Even when safety precautions are taken, police are often injured on the job. Like other governmental employees, police officers are entitled to workers' compensation when they are injured in the line of duty.

Workers compensation can help cover expenses that government workers may encounter following a workplace accident. These expenses include lost wages, medical expenses and other costs relating to the injury or the time taken off from work.

Three central New York police officers may want to explore their workers' compensation options following a recent car accident. The accident occurred while the officers were trying to apprehend a man driving a stolen vehicle. According to reports, the accident occurred as the suspect was traveling the wrong-way down a one-way street. The officers were hit while waiting inside an unmarked car.

While none of the officers' injuries are life threatening, the officers did require treatment at a local hospital. These injuries and subsequent hospital stay could cause immediate and long term issues for the officers. These officers should be able to recover from the accident without the burden of worrying about how they are going to pay for the bills. Workers' compensation provides this security.

In most situations, employers in New York, including the government, need to carry workers' compensation insurance so that coverage will be available if workers are hurt. In order to get benefits from the workers' compensation system, injured employers must apply and work with these insurance companies who need to approve the claims. In order for claims to be approved, they must be submitted correctly with all the required documentation which can be a lengthy process without the right help.
